League   Season 2010/11  -- Exeter 1 finished 5th and Exeter 2 finished 3rd in their leages. The new 2011/12 seasons starts in October 2011.

South West Korfball League

During the winter months we play in the South West Korfball League ('SWKL'), competing against Taunton Soul, Bristol University, Bristol City, Horfield (from Bristol) and Gloucester Lions.

There are two divisions within the League, the First Division and the Second Team Division. At present there is no promotion or relegation between the divisions - although this may change in future.

Exeter had a fantastic 2007/08 season, winning both divisions. The 2008/09 season went down to the last day of matches with the Second Team winning their division again, and the Firsts losing a closely fought duel with Bristol City to come second. Both teams finished second in their divisions 2009/10.

Results Report

Saturday 16 October '10
Home v Gloucester
2.15 - 5.15pm, Wonford

Firsts:  7 - 9

Seconds:  14 - 5

In a tight, low-scoring game, Exeter Firsts eventually succumbed a little disappointingly to Gloucester, with the away team only pulling away in the final minutes of the match, after Exeter had led for much of the first half. Exeter struggled to put together fluent attacks and paid the price with Gloucester's long-shooting more accurate and Stuart Hall's 5 goals for Gloucester proving particularly decisive.

Exeter Seconds' experience finally told in spite of a plethora of missed penalties and the goals eventually came thick and fast with a healthy winning margin gained. Particularly notable was a debut goal for Hannah Welters and hat-tricks for Steve Tremlett, Tom Wilkinson and Helen Bissell.

Away v Taunton

Firsts:  11 - 11

Seconds:  5 - 12

The Firsts showed great character to come back from 3 - 9 down at half time to briefly lead by one goal deep into the second half, after a cooly taken penalty from Matt had equalled the scores moments before (see pic left). A nail-biting final few minutes ensued from which the Firsts emerged with a well deserved point from the drawn result.

After a close opening, with both sides level on 2 - 2 after ten minutes, the Seconds inexorably pulled away from a feisty but inexperienced Taunton side to win by a handsome margin. It was great to see almost all members of the team making it onto the score sheet. Steve and Princess seemed particularly pleased...

Firsts:  3 - 15

Seconds:  6 - 8
Despite putting in a coherent performance, two goals from Rob and another by Helen were only a consolation as the Firsts succumbed to a well organised and confident Bristol attack. A fine long shot from Lisa bounced off the korf (pic left).

The Seconds fought well against a City Second team containing several regular First team members to narrowly lose their match. Memorable moments included two cooly converted penalties from Deb, and a guest appearance from Kevin Allen of Bistol before he changed into a sharp pinstripe suit to coach the Firsts to victory from the sidelines.

23 January '11
Home v Taunton
3pm

Firsts:  13 - 14

Seconds:  6 - 5
Part 2 of this year's local derby with Taunton saw two games that quite literally could not have been closer. Exeter 2 struggled for fluidity but the returning prodigal son Kevin, and Keith, showed their class with a pair of hat-tricks which were enough to seal the victory for Exeter.

In a game of impressive athleticism, quite decent ball skills, passion, controversy, a yellow card and about a dozen penalties, Exeter 1 put in their best display of the season but lost out to a well-drilled, physical Taunton side who probably just deserved to edge it right at the end with - what else? - a match-clinching penalty. Credit to our resident international, Ana, both for a well-taken hat trick and winning a series of penalties towards the end of the 2nd half, all of which were converted under pressure by Alan Martin, and brought Exeter right back into it.

5 February '11
Away v Horfield
2pm

Firsts:  5 - 13

Seconds:  7 - 5
Only five months into the season and Exeter 1 saw their first victory!  And a thoroughly convincing one too!  Despite numerous shots put up by Horfield, the Firsts led from the outset and largely dominated the match by exploiting the Hors' tendency to over-commit - and by keeping cool heads to the end.

The Seconds got off to a frustrating start with attacks running out of space and possession being repeatedly lost. If anything the 4 - 1 scoreline flattered them as Horfield missed no less than 3 penalty attempts. Things came together later in the second half but there just wasn't time to mount a full come-back against a very able Horfield 2 team.

13 February '11
Away v Gloucester
4pm

Firsts:  11 - 12

Seconds:  4 - 11
All that carbing-up in Carluccio's earlier in the day paid off for the Exeter Korfball and Fine Dining Club (as they must now be called) with both teams gaining maximum points up the M5 on Sunday evening.

Captain Hannah got the Seconds off to a flying start with 2 goals in quick succession - and while Gloucester played well, some good creative attacking and solid work in defence from Exeter saw the visitors take the spoils by a handsome margin.

The Firsts had a less comfortable game. After starting brightly, to lead 2 - 5, some outrageous long shooting from Gloucester seemed to shake Exeter 1's momentum. A well taken penalty from Rob helped restore confidence but, despite Alan and Ana scoring 4 a piece, it stayed tight to the finish. Every goal counted, as Steve's exuberant victory celebrations showed!

Thanks to Nigel for coming out of semi-retirement again to keep us legal. *

26 Feb '11
Home v Bristol Uni
3pm

Firsts:  15 - 9

Seconds:  16 - 3
The students played with their normal spirit on Saturday but failed to threaten at the Wonford.

As usual this season, Exeter 2 had the more comfortable match with almost all members of the team sharing in the 16 (yes 16) goals.

The Firsts were never behind, but the students drew level at 9 - 9 before some deft running-in shots put the result beyond doubt in the final 15 minutes of the match.

The students may have been a bit sleepy after the night before, but this was still a couple of excellent results for the club.

19 March '11 - Super Saturday
Away v Bristol City
City Academy

Firsts:  15 - 7

Seconds:  5 - 6
After a struggle getting enough male players out to make legal teams, Connor, JC and Lawrence from Exeter Uni came heroically to our rescue (and put in some really solid supporting performances too). Fingers crossed, this means our record of no forfeited games all season will remain intact. *

The venue for 'Super Saturday' was Bristol's City Academy, where 3 games were  played all day across 3 adjoining pitches, creating a vibrant, and seriously warm, atmosphere in the spring sunshine.

The Firsts showed great spirit (Alan and Lisa particularly scoring memorably) but unfortunately the game was a hard one to chase for E1 as Bristol drew inexorably ahead, assisted by a small glut of free passes. It was a good job the ref didn't speak Portugese, for Ana's sake!

The Seconds' match was the proverbial game of two halves. Dominating in the first half, it seemed we could do no wrong as the Bristol attack proved toothless and flowing open play from E2 reaped dividends. But Bristol needed points from this match to win the Division! So team Bristol was re-equipped with new legs after the break, pushing Exeter sharply onto the back foot as a tide of noise rose from the City bench in the last few minutes, while we struggled to keep control of the game. Bristol were within sniffing distance of the title, but creditably stubborn defence saw Exeter finish with both points in our tired sweaty hands.

Overall, a great end to the 2010 - 11 season (heat exhaustion aside) which saw the Seconds finish 3rd in their league while the Firsts finished 5th. An enjoyable season was toasted in the pub later at the SWKA End of Season bash with a well deserved beer or three.
